A 73-year-old woman was reportedly assaulted on Thursday near the 1600 block of Ocean Front Walk by a male suspect, according to authorities. The suspect has been identified as 39-year-old Jalan Rodger James, who is currently experiencing homelessness. He was swiftly apprehended by law enforcement shortly after the incident and now faces charges of battery on an elder and resisting arrest.

The victim recounted that during her routine morning walk, James approached her while yelling incoherently. Despite her efforts to move out of his way, he forcefully pushed her to the ground. As a result of the incident, she sustained a back injury and abrasions on her hands from attempting to break her fall.

In a subsequent call to emergency services, witnesses reported James attempting to assault bystanders by throwing punches. Within minutes, the Santa Monica Police Department (SMPD) Drone Operator successfully located James near 2nd and Colorado. Officers promptly arrived at the scene and took him into custody.

Following the arrest, the case was presented to the Los Angeles County District Attorney’s office. Detectives had compiled video evidence and statements from witnesses to support the charges against James. He now faces charges of felony battery resulting in serious bodily harm, felony elder/adult abuse, and two counts of resisting an executive officer.

Moreover, James is also under investigation for potential charges in another Santa Monica assault case. This case is currently pending review by the District Attorney.

Chief Ramon Batista emphasised, “The safety and well-being of our most vulnerable residents is a top priority for the SMPD. Assaults on elderly individuals are taken very seriously, and we will continue to pursue felony charges in these situations.”
