The Sokoto State Government has taken decisive action by sealing off a hotel in the area following the tragic murder of Balkisu Garba, a mother of four, allegedly at the hands of her boyfriend. The incident, which has shocked the community, led to the immediate closure of the establishment on Thursday, May 30, 2024.
The Commissioner for Religious Affairs, Dr. Jabir Maihula, explained that the government’s decision to shut down the hotel was a result of numerous complaints from residents regarding the immoral activities taking place within its premises.
Dr. Maihula stated, “Even last week, a woman was killed in the hotel. So because of all these, Governor Ahmed Aliyu directed the immediate closure of the hotel.” This swift action highlights the government’s commitment to maintaining law and order in the state.
Furthermore, the Commissioner of Commerce, Dahiru Haruna, revealed that the hotel was operating illegally as it was not registered with the state government. This lack of proper documentation further justified the closure of the establishment.
Following the tragic incident, the State Police Command swiftly apprehended the suspect, Saifullah Hassan, hailing from Gummi Local Government Area of Zamfara State. In a startling confession, Hassan admitted to being in a long-term relationship with the deceased.
Hassan recounted, “I brought her to a hotel room and we had a minor misunderstanding. She hit me with something on the head, and I became furious and slaughtered her. But I am now regretting what I did because the deceased had been my girlfriend for quite a long time.”
The State Police Commissioner, Hayatu Kaigama, provided details of the incident, stating that the victim, Balkisu Garba, was brought into the hotel by an unidentified guest and tragically killed by the suspect. The swift actions of the police led to the identification and subsequent arrest of Saifullah Hassan in Funtua, Katsina State.
Investigations are currently ongoing, and once completed, the suspect will be arraigned to face the full force of the law.
