18-Year-Old Arrested for Alleged Attack on Pro-Palestinian Protesters at UCLA
A suspect, identified as 18-year-old Edan On, was arrested on May 23 for his alleged involvement in an attack on pro-Palestinian protesters at the University of California, Los Angeles (UCLA) on April 30. According to a CNN investigation, On is a student at Beverly Hills High School. The Los Angeles District Attorney’s Office confirmed that On has been released on bond.
UCLA Police Department Statement
Following the incident on April 30, the UCLA Police Department released a statement detailing the events that transpired. The statement mentioned that a group of instigators violently attacked students, faculty, and staff members who were participating in an encampment at Royce Quad. One individual, identified as Edan On, was captured on video assaulting encampment occupants with a wooden pole, causing serious injuries to at least one victim. UCLA Police Department detectives conducted an extensive investigation that included interviews with victims, witnesses, and the review of security camera footage and videos from the public and media.
Social Media Videos
Footage from social media platforms showed a man wearing a white mask and white hooded sweatshirt attacking pro-Palestinian activists at the encampment. CNN identified this individual as Edan On after speaking with On’s mother, Sharon On-Siboni, who initially boasted about On’s actions in now-deleted Facebook posts. On-Siboni later retracted her statements and denied On’s involvement in the incident. Beverly Hills Unified School District refrained from confirming On’s enrollment status at Beverly Hills High School, citing federal privacy laws.
Beverly Hills Unified School District Response
Beverly Hills Unified School District Superintendent Michael Bregy stated that any student engaging in such actions would not be allowed to participate in the school’s upcoming graduation ceremony on May 31. Bregy emphasized that attending the graduation ceremony is a privilege that requires students to uphold high standards of behaviour.
Legal Proceedings
The Los Angeles District Attorney’s Office spokesperson, Venusse Dunn, disclosed that Edan On’s first court appearance is scheduled for June 21. Dunn confirmed that On was released on bond on May 24 and added that the case is still under review, with no plea entered as of the latest update on May 28.
