MUNISING, Mich. (WJMN) — A tragic incident unfolded at Pictured Rocks National Lakeshore when emergency responders were called to the scene on Wednesday evening. The distressing situation led to the discovery of a deceased individual, later identified as 45-year-old Steven Poppema from Holland, MI.
A spokesperson for the National Park Service revealed that the call for help indicated that Poppema had fallen unconscious and was showing signs of distress while on a hike towards Spray Falls.
Response Efforts
Upon receiving the distress call, two groups of first responders sprang into action. One team from the Alger County Sheriff’s Office approached the scene via a marine response vessel, while another team made their way on foot towards the remote location of Spray Falls.
The challenging terrain of Spray Falls meant that it took approximately 30-40 minutes for the responders to reach Poppema. Tragically, upon arrival, Poppema was found deceased at the scene.
Condolences and Assistance
Expressing condolences to Poppema’s family, Park Superintendent David Horne stated, “We extend our sincere condolences to the family of Steven Poppema, and we thank our agency partners for their assistance in responding to this incident.”
