New Delhi, 30th May 2024 – The Customs Department has taken swift action in a case of gold smuggling at the Airport, where an FIR has been filed against a passenger and his accomplice. The passenger, who arrived from Bangkok on flight TG-323, was found to be carrying gold worth over Rs 35.22 lakh, in violation of customs regulations.
Accusations Against Shashi Tharoor’s Aide
Reports indicate that the passenger’s accomplice is none other than Shiv Kumar Prasad, an aide to Congress Member of Parliament Shashi Tharoor. Prasad, who was carrying an Aerodrome Entry permit ID identifying him as Tharoor’s Personal Assistant, was intercepted by Customs officials at the IGI Airport.
Investigations Underway
Joint Commissioner of Customs at IGI Airport, Varun Koundinya, stated that the circumstances under which Prasad obtained the Aerodrome Entry Permit are under scrutiny. Additionally, another individual suspected to be involved in the smuggling operation was apprehended at the airport, with a significant amount of gold in his possession.
Seizure of Gold
The Customs Department seized the recovered gold under section 110 of the Customs Act, 1962, totalling Rs 35.22 Lakhs. The investigation into the smuggling operation is ongoing, with authorities working to uncover the full extent of the illegal activities.
Shashi Tharoor’s Response
In response to the incident, Shashi Tharoor expressed shock and disappointment, stating that he was unaware of his aide’s alleged involvement in the smuggling attempt. Tharoor emphasised that he does not condone any wrongdoing and fully supports the authorities in their efforts to investigate the matter and take necessary action.
Tharoor further clarified that his aide, a 72-year-old retiree undergoing frequent dialysis, was employed on a part-time basis for airport facilitation assistance on compassionate grounds. He affirmed his commitment to allowing the law to run its course in addressing the situation.
