Authorities in Washington have confirmed the identification of a body discovered in a local river in 2022 as that of a missing 34-year-old man. The Cowlitz County Sheriff’s Office revealed in a news release on Wednesday, May 29th, that the remains found in the Columbia River have been identified as belonging to Pierre Pearson, originally from Georgia.
The discovery was made by two fishermen near Martin’s Bar in Woodland on June 2, 2022, according to Troy Brightbill, Chief Criminal Deputy of the CCSO. Pearson, who was believed to have been living without a permanent residence in Portland, Oregon, was last in contact with his family in April 2021, over a year before his body was found in the river.
The circumstances surrounding Pearson’s death remain unclear at this point. Despite this, the Cowlitz County Coroner’s Office, which conducted an examination of the body, stated that there were no signs of trauma present, as reported by Brightbill.
Unfortunately, due to the advanced state of decomposition of the body, facial identification and fingerprint collection were not possible. Furthermore, no form of identification was found with the body, complicating the identification process.
In an effort to identify the deceased individual, detectives collaborated with Othram, a private laboratory based in Texas, in December 2022. Advanced forensic DNA testing was employed, and eventually, the victim’s dental records were obtained after Pearson’s stepmother and father were contacted.
Following the retrieval of the dental records, a forensic odontologist was able to confirm that the remains belonged to Pearson. Brightbill stated, “There is no indication that Pearson died as a result of a crime. The investigation into his death will now be closed.”
Moving forward, the Coroner’s Office will coordinate with Pearson’s family to arrange for the transfer of his remains. This closure brings some semblance of resolution to the tragic case of Pierre Pearson, whose untimely death has left many unanswered questions.
