The Knoxville Police Department announced on Thursday morning that additional charges are likely for a Knoxville man involved in a crash that critically injured a 20-year-old woman on Wednesday night.

Matthew Christian, 49, has been charged with driving under the influence and leaving the scene of a crash following the incident that took place on Middlebrook Pike at Amherst Road. The crash occurred around 7:15 p.m., prompting a response from KPD officers.

According to witnesses at the scene, the woman was riding a white Vespa moped eastbound on Middlebrook Pike and was stopped at the Amherst Road traffic light when she was rear-ended by a gray Dodge Charger. The impact caused the woman to be thrown from the moped onto the road. Christian, the driver of the Charger, fled the scene before officers arrived.

The injured woman was rushed to the University of Tennessee Medical Center with critical, life-threatening injuries. Meanwhile, another KPD officer spotted the gray Dodge Charger heading west on Middlebrook Pike and managed to stop the vehicle at Middlebrook and Dick Lonas Road. The car displayed significant front-end damage consistent with the crash, and Christian exhibited signs of impairment.

Further investigation revealed that Christian had a prior DUI conviction from May 2021. He was subsequently taken into custody. The condition of the injured woman remains critical, and KPD continues to investigate the crash.
