Accident – Death – Obituary News : The recent identification of human remains found off Milestone Road in early April has shed new light on the case of Mary Macy, a Nantucket resident who went missing from her home back in June 2015. According to a death certificate filed with the Nantucket Town Clerk’s office, the remains have been positively identified as those of Macy.
Macy, who was 60 years old at the time of her disappearance, was believed to have early-onset Alzheimer’s disease. Despite a comprehensive search of the island following her disappearance, no trace of Macy was found at the time.
The death certificate, filed on May 1st, records Macy’s date of death as April 4, 2024 – the same day the remains were discovered by a passerby in the Philips Run swamp area off Milestone Road. The cause of death listed on the certificate is currently marked as “pending investigation.”
Nantucket Police Lt. Angus MacVicar confirmed that the case is still under active investigation. The remains, which include “an intact skull and many bones,” will be transported off-island to the custody of the state medical examiner for further examination.
The discovery of the bones on April 4 was made by a seasonal resident who was scouring the area for deer antlers, commonly referred to as sheds. The location of the find was approximately half a mile south of Milestone Road.
