Accident – Death – Obituary News :

In a recently released video by the Carlsbad Police Department, a chilling incident unfolds as Officer Michael McKinney is viciously attacked with a skateboard in a surprise assault that led to him firing shots at his assailant.

The harrowing event took place late in the evening on March 29, at approximately 11:15 p.m. Officer McKinney was on patrol along Carlsbad Village Drive, driving under Interstate 5, when his patrol car was targeted with a rock, resulting in the destruction of its spotlight and windshield, according to police reports.

Following the rock attack, Officer McKinney promptly called for assistance and pulled into a nearby shopping center to assess the damage with his supervisor. It was during this inspection that an unidentified man approached Officer McKinney from behind and struck him forcefully with a skateboard, causing significant harm.

Body-worn camera footage of the incident captured the assailant, whose identity was concealed with a mask, assaulting Officer McKinney with the skateboard. The video clearly shows the officer’s startled reaction, as he believed he had been shot. In a state of panic and self-defense, Officer McKinney fired three shots at the fleeing attacker in the parking lot.

Fortunately, no one was injured by the gunfire. As the sergeant pursued the assailant, a large rock fell from the man’s pocket, corroborating the suspicion that he was responsible for the initial rock attack on Officer McKinney’s patrol car.

Additional law enforcement officers swiftly responded to the scene, and the suspect, later identified as 32-year-old Kyle McCord, was apprehended just a few blocks away from the incident location.

In the aftermath of the assault, Officer McKinney was transported to a nearby fire station for medical attention. His injuries were severe, including a skull fracture, brain bleed, and concussion. “I got shot,” Officer McKinney can be heard telling a firefighter as he sought medical aid. He was subsequently admitted to the hospital for further treatment.

McCord was taken into custody and faces charges of attempted murder of a police officer and committing a felony while out on bail or bond.
