Authorities are seeking murder charges against a man from Joplin following a fatal shooting incident.

The Newton County Sheriff’s Office received a call just after midnight on Thursday, May 30, 2024, reporting a shooting on Freddy Lane in Joplin.

Upon arrival, deputies found the body of 50-year-old Eric Whittington, who had been involved in an altercation with the suspect.

Newton County Detectives are actively investigating the case, with 42-year-old white male Joshua William Ray Taft identified as the main suspect.

A felony warrant has been issued for Taft on charges including Murder Second Degree, Armed Criminal Action, Unlawful Possession of a Firearm, and Endangering the Welfare of a Child First Degree.

The Sheriff’s Office is urging anyone with information on Taft’s whereabouts to contact them immediately at 417-451-8300 or Central Dispatch at 417-451-4242.

Authorities have warned that Joshua William Taft should be considered armed and dangerous.
