In a recent development, a 34-year-old Wisconsin man, Jesse Turnmire from Durand, has been sentenced to 51 months in federal prison for possessing a firearm and ammunition as a convicted felon. This decision was made by Judge James Peterson in a federal court in Madison.

Incident Details

The incident took place on July 7, 2023, in the town of Clear Creek, where law enforcement responded to a report of a man, later identified as Turnmire, slumping over his vehicle’s steering wheel at a stop sign. Suspecting that Turnmire was under the influence of drugs, officers conducted a search of his vehicle.

During the search, a firearm wrapped in a restaurant uniform shirt was discovered inside a bag hidden under the corner of the front bumper. Additionally, a gun magazine containing seven rounds of .45 caliber ammunition was found in the center console of the vehicle.

Legal Background

Turnmire is prohibited from legally possessing firearms due to multiple felony convictions related to drug offences in La Crosse and Trempealeau Counties. He also has previous state and federal convictions for possessing a firearm as a felon.

As a result of the investigation conducted by the Eau Claire County Sheriff’s Office and the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms, and Explosives, Turnmire was charged and subsequently pleaded guilty to the crimes in February.

Sentencing and Outcome

Following his guilty plea, Judge James Peterson revoked Turnmire’s federal supervision and imposed a two-year sentence to run concurrently with the 51-month sentence for his new conviction. This decision underscores the seriousness of illegal firearm possession and aims to deter similar offences in the future.

Overall, the sentencing of Jesse Turnmire serves as a reminder of the legal consequences associated with possessing firearms as a convicted felon. It also highlights the collaborative efforts of law enforcement agencies in ensuring the safety and security of communities in Wisconsin.
