Kyiv (CNN) — Roman Shapovalenko, a Ukrainian man, endured a nightmare at the hands of Russian security forces. Within an hour of his arrest, he was threatened with rape.

Shapovalenko’s ordeal began on August 25, 2022, following Ukraine’s Independence Day. He recounted how armed, masked officers from Russia’s Federal Security Service (FSB) raided his home in the occupied city of Kherson. A message on his phone referring to Russian soldiers as “orcs” led to his brutal arrest.

During his captivity, Shapovalenko was subjected to unimaginable horrors. He described being electrocuted in his genital area, threatened with rape using a glass bottle, and even made to fear sterilization.

Systematic Use of Sexual Violence

Shapovalenko’s experience is sadly not unique. Reports indicate that sexual violence by Russian forces against Ukrainians, both civilians and soldiers, has been widespread since the start of the invasion more than two years ago.

Human rights organizations have documented the rampant use of sexual violence by Russian police and security forces. This practice has now extended to occupied Ukrainian territories.

Male victims of sexual violence are increasingly coming forward, though many cases go unreported due to stigma and shame. The United Nations Security Council reported 85 cases of sexual violence in Ukraine in 2023, affecting men, women, and children.

Survivors Speak Out

CNN interviewed several male survivors who shared their harrowing experiences of forced nudity, genital electrocution, and threats of rape while in Russian detention facilities across various occupied regions in Ukraine.

These survivors’ testimonies align with cases documented by regional prosecutors and are corroborated by witnesses from the same facilities. The evidence paints a grim picture of Russia’s systematic use of sexual violence to subjugate the Ukrainian population.

Perpetrators identified

Ukrainian authorities have identified individuals responsible for these heinous acts. The FSB, Rosgvardia, and other Russian agencies have been implicated in orchestrating and carrying out sexual violence against detainees.

Prosecutors have issued indictments against Russian officers involved in torturing and sexually abusing Ukrainian citizens. These cases are currently being heard in court, although the whereabouts of the accused remain unknown.

Seeking Justice

Ukraine is committed to bringing the perpetrators of sexual violence to justice. Efforts are underway to prosecute not only the direct perpetrators but also those in leadership positions who enabled these crimes.

The Ukrainian government is working with international courts, including the ICC and ICJ, to seek accountability for these war crimes. Victims are being supported through specialized training programs and victim-oriented approaches.

Shapovalenko’s Message

Despite the trauma he endured, Shapovalenko is determined to raise awareness about the ongoing atrocities in occupied territories. He emphasized the importance of sharing his story to shed light on the brutal reality faced by many Ukrainians.

As he continues on the path to recovery, Shapovalenko remains steadfast in his mission to ensure that the world knows the truth about the atrocities inflicted by Russian forces in Ukraine.

CNN’s Svitlana Vlasova and Victoria Butenko contributed to this report.
