RICHVALE — A devastating incident unfolded at the Richvale Airport on Tuesday afternoon, resulting in the loss of a seasoned crop duster pilot from Chico. The pilot, identified as Hugh Mattingly, aged 63, tragically lost his life in the crash, as confirmed by Cal Fire-Butte County Fire Capt. Dan Collins.

The wreckage of the plane, a single-engine Schweizer G-164B, was discovered approximately 30 feet away from the airport runway, where Mattingly was found. Cal Fire-Butte County responded to the distress call at 1:53 p.m. and immediately commenced the extraction process. Despite their efforts, Mattingly was pronounced dead at the scene by Butte Emergency Medical Services paramedics.

FAA Investigation Underway

The Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) has initiated an investigation into the crash, with the National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB) taking the lead on the case. FAA Public Affairs Officer Elizabeth Cory confirmed that the authorities are working diligently to determine the cause of the tragic accident.

Agricultural Community Mourns Loss

Mattingly, a dedicated pilot for Jones Flying Service, had a profound impact on the agricultural community in Butte County and beyond. With over three decades of experience in the agricultural lending industry, he played a pivotal role in supporting farmers and their operations.

Butte County Supervisor Tod Kimmelshue, who shared a close professional relationship with Mattingly, fondly recalled their shared experiences and mutual passion for farming. Kimmelshue praised Mattingly’s dedication to rural communities and his unwavering commitment to assisting farmers in need.

A Legacy of Service

Mattingly’s involvement in various agricultural organisations, including the Superior Ag Golf Committee at Butte Creek Country Club, underscored his commitment to nurturing the next generation of agricultural leaders. Through his work and dedication, he touched the lives of many farmers and agricultural students, leaving behind a legacy of service and compassion.

Despite the tragic circumstances surrounding his untimely passing, Mattingly’s love for flying remained a constant throughout his life. Following the devastation of the Camp Fire in 2018, he made the courageous decision to pursue his passion for aviation full-time, a choice that brought him immense joy and fulfilment.

As the community mourns the loss of a beloved pilot and friend, Mattingly’s legacy of service and dedication to the agricultural industry will continue to inspire generations to come.
