Christine Vorpagel, the District 9 Supervisor on the Lincoln County Board, has found herself in legal trouble after being charged with Operating While Intoxicated (OWI) and Possession of Open Intoxicants in a Motor Vehicle. The incident occurred on Saturday, May 18, 2024, when Vorpagel was discovered passed out in her vehicle on Deer Run Ave. in the Town of Pine River, east of Merrill.
Details of the Incident
At approximately 3 p.m., a concerned citizen reported to the Lincoln County Dispatch Center that an elderly woman appeared to be unconscious in her vehicle with alcohol visible near the driver’s seat. Responding officers found Vorpagel in a state of impairment and conducted sobriety tests, which revealed a blood alcohol content (BAC) of .14, well above the legal limit of .08 in Wisconsin.
Following her arrest for OWI, Vorpagel was taken to Aspirus Merrill Hospital for a blood test to confirm her BAC level. She was subsequently released to her husband’s care. In addition to the OWI charge, Vorpagel also received a citation for Possession of Open Intoxicants in a Motor Vehicle.
Legal Consequences
Vorpagel is scheduled to appear in court on July 1 to address both charges. If found guilty, she could face fines of $1,037.50 for OWI and $263.50 for the open intoxicants violation. Despite the charges, Vorpagel maintains her innocence until proven otherwise.
Impact on Vorpagel’s Role as Supervisor
Vorpagel’s legal troubles have raised questions about her position as a County Board Supervisor. Jesse Boyd, another Supervisor, stated that elected officials should set a positive example for the community. While the Board does not condone drunk driving, Vorpagel’s fate will be determined by the legal system.
As an elected official, Vorpagel is expected to uphold high standards of conduct. The Board will monitor the situation closely and take appropriate action if necessary. Until then, Vorpagel remains innocent until proven guilty in a court of law.
