Man Linked to Cold Case Murder of Uncle in New York Through DNA Evidence

LONDON (TCD) — A breakthrough in forensic technology has led to the arrest of a 41-year-old man in Florida in connection with the cold case murder of his 64-year-old uncle in New York. The suspect, Anthony Scalici, was identified through DNA evidence found on a fork he discarded.

The Queens District Attorney’s Office announced on Thursday, May 30, that Anthony Scalici has been charged with second-degree murder for the alleged killing of Rosario Prestigiacomo in 2009. The case remained unsolved for over a decade until recent advancements in genetic genealogy technology provided a breakthrough.

On the fateful day of February 10, 2009, New York Police Department officers responded to a call in the Ridgewood neighborhood of Queens after a neighbor reported hearing a disturbance. Upon entering Prestigiacomo’s residence, officers discovered the lifeless body of the victim lying in a pool of blood in his hallway.

The district attorney’s office revealed that Prestigiacomo had been brutally stabbed 16 times, with injuries to his face, neck, and torso. The victim’s lung, esophagus, chest, and lower abdomen sustained puncture wounds, along with blunt force injuries on various parts of his body.

Despite collecting evidence at the scene and matching blood samples to the victim and an unidentified male, the case went cold as investigators were unable to identify the suspect. However, a recent collaboration with genetic genealogy company Othram Inc. led to the identification of the perpetrator as Scalici, who is the nephew of the victim.

After tracing Scalici to Boynton Beach, Florida, investigators managed to obtain a DNA sample from a fork he had discarded. The DNA from the fork was a match to the blood evidence found at the crime scene, as well as other DNA samples collected from the victim’s fingernails.

U.S. Marshals, the Boynton Beach Police Department, and the NYPD Regional Fugitive Task Force apprehended Scalici on May 14, and he was extradited back to New York on May 29. This arrest marks the first time forensic genetic genealogy technology has been used to identify and apprehend a homicide suspect in New York City.

This breakthrough in forensic technology showcases the power of DNA evidence in solving cold cases and bringing perpetrators to justice. The collaborative efforts of law enforcement agencies and genetic genealogy experts have paved the way for advancements in criminal investigations, ultimately leading to closure for the families of victims.
