OTTAWA COUNTY, Mich. — A suspect has been charged in connection to a domestic assault incident that left a woman shot and a man stabbed in Robinson Township last week.

The incident took place on May 23 near 96th Avenue and Winans Street, as reported by the Ottawa County Sheriff’s Office (OCSO).

According to officials, a 35-year-old man opened fire on his girlfriend with their five children present in the home. The situation escalated when one of the children, a 16-year-old boy, intervened to protect his mother using a knife. The man attempted to shoot at the teenager but missed.

The woman sustained injuries to her leg and head but is expected to make a full recovery. She has already been released from the hospital. The man, who suffered a knife wound to the neck, is also expected to survive.

The suspect has been identified as Vaughn Smith. On Wednesday, he was formally charged with two counts of assault with murderous intent, three counts of felony firearms, and one count of illegal possession of a firearm.

Smith has been placed on a $5 million cash/surety bond as the legal proceedings continue.
