A shocking video circulating on social media has sparked outrage in Tamil Nadu, showing a woman having to carry her 80-year-old mother at a government hospital allegedly due to the unavailability of a wheelchair. The incident has prompted health authorities to launch an investigation following public outcry.
Ms Ambika Shanmugam, the Joint Director of Health overseeing the inquiry, stated, “I have spoken to the Superintendent and the Resident Medical Officer of the Hospital. Today, I am conducting further investigations with other hospital staff and attendants.”
The 36-second video, which has not been independently verified by NDTV, depicts a woman identified as Valarmathi carrying her elderly mother, Sorna, into the hospital after a road accident. Valarmathi is also seen transporting her mother to another location within the hospital, reportedly to collect the outpatient registration slip.
According to hospital authorities, the government facility has an ample supply of wheelchairs and stretchers. However, they explained that at the time of the incident, the staff was preoccupied with the arrival of a body related to a murder case. They asserted that the attendant did not request assistance but chose to carry her mother to expedite treatment. Ms Shanmugam added, “Neither the patient nor her family has lodged a formal complaint.”
An investigation has been launched into the matter to ascertain the facts and ensure proper procedures were followed, she further mentioned.
