ROCK SPRINGS – A New York man, Saviol Saint Jean, aged 45, is facing up to 30 years in prison after being involved in a tragic incident in eastern Sweetwater County that resulted in the death of an ambulance driver in late 2022.

Saint Jean appeared in court on felony charges of aggravated homicide by vehicle and aggravated assault and battery. The charge of aggravated homicide by vehicle carries a maximum penalty of 20 years in prison and a $10,000 fine, while the charge of aggravated assault and battery carries a maximum sentence of 10 years in prison and a $10,000 fine. His bond was set at $150,000 cash or surety, a decision upheld by Circuit Court Judge Craig Jones. A preliminary hearing is scheduled for June 5 at 1:30 p.m.

The incident occurred on December 21, 2022, on the westbound lane of Interstate 80. Wyoming Highway Patrol and local emergency medical providers responded to a crash at mile marker 197 at 4:04 a.m. Trooper Jay Scheel arrived at the scene to find a chaotic situation involving multiple vehicles, including a red Ford F150 truck, a blue Kenworth operated by Rey Logistics, a red Freightliner Cascadia operated by Vamar, Inc., and a white and blue Ford F350 Super Duty Ambulance. It was determined that Saint Jean’s truck had collided with the ambulance.

Tragically, 29-year-old EMT Tyeler Harris lost his life in the crash. Harris was found under the landing gear of a truck, having been struck by Saint Jean’s vehicle and thrown into the landing gear. Another EMT, Tiffany Gruetzmacher, was also injured in the incident.

An investigation revealed that Saint Jean’s truck was driving at an excessive speed of between 70 and 80 MPH when it collided with the ambulance. Despite Saint Jean claiming he was driving at 55-60 MPH and trying to avoid the ambulance, the evidence suggested otherwise. A Fatal Collision Reconstruction report concluded that human error was the primary cause of the crash, with no environmental or mechanical conditions contributing to the incident.

The court documents highlighted the sequence of events leading to the crash, with Saint Jean’s truck entering the left lane and colliding with the ambulance parked near the median. The report also noted that all emergency lights on the ambulance were activated, and the EMTs were outside the vehicle checking for injuries when the collision occurred.

As the case progresses, Saint Jean faces serious charges that could result in a lengthy prison sentence. The tragic loss of life and injuries caused by the crash serve as a stark reminder of the importance of road safety and responsible driving.
