SUNNY ISLES BEACH, Fla. (WFOR) – Authorities in Sunny Isles Beach, Florida, have expressed shock and concern over a disturbing incident captured on cellphone video that shows a 10-year-old boy being choked and shaken by a 60-year-old man at Gwen Margolis Park on Memorial Day.
The suspect, identified as Robert Marcu, faces charges of aggravated child abuse with great bodily harm and battery by strangulation in connection with the incident. The video footage reportedly shows Marcu grabbing the young boy by the neck and violently shaking him, causing the child’s head to bob back and forth. To protect the child’s identity, his face has been blurred in the video.
Sunny Isles Beach Police Sgt. Melissa Porro expressed grave concern over the incident, stating, “The biggest concern here is that a grown man with the strength of a man went after a young child that was helpless and could not, based on size alone, defend himself.”
According to authorities, the 10-year-old victim and another child, believed to be Marcu’s son, were playing with water guns when a dispute arose, leading to Marcu’s intervention.
Sgt. Porro described the chilling moment when Marcu allegedly approached the child involved in the play fight and proceeded to choke and shake him, causing the boy to cry hysterically and become visibly upset.
The arrest report details that Marcu forcibly grabbed the victim by the neck, obstructing his breathing and airway, while shaking him vigorously. Marcu reportedly justified his actions by stating, “I know what I did, and I did it to teach him a lesson.”
Following the incident, the young victim was left with red marks and scratches, although he was physically unharmed. Marcu appeared in court, where his bond was set at £5,000, and he was ordered to maintain distance from the victim.
During the court proceedings, it was revealed that the children involved in the altercation attend the same school.
