Accident – Death – Obituary News : Human remains discovered in northern Arizona in 2019 have finally been identified as belonging to a man reported missing in Phoenix two years prior, according to authorities who made the announcement on Wednesday.
The Coconino County Sheriff’s Office revealed that the skeletal remains found at the base of Mount Elden, north of Flagstaff, have been confirmed to be those of Mark Austin Dunne, with the assistance of a Utah forensic lab.
Mark Austin Dunne was reported missing to the Phoenix Police Department in March 2017 after failing to make contact with his family for an extended period. The discovery of the unidentified remains by a hiker in a wooded area near Flagstaff raised questions and concerns about the missing man’s fate.
In an effort to solve the mystery, CCSO enlisted the help of Intermountain Forensics, a Salt Lake City-based company specializing in forensic genetic genealogy techniques. By developing a DNA profile from the remains and comparing it with existing profiles, a potential match was identified as Dunne in February of this year.
Further confirmation of Dunne’s identity was obtained through DNA testing at the University of North Texas and additional information gathered by detectives. The cause of Dunne’s death remains unknown, despite evidence suggesting that he may have been camping at the time.
The identification of the remains brings closure to the family and loved ones of Mark Austin Dunne, shedding light on a previously unresolved missing person case. The investigation into his disappearance and subsequent death continues as authorities work to piece together the timeline of events leading to the tragic discovery in the remote wilderness of northern Arizona.
