Heavy Rains Claim Lives in Assam, Red Alert Issued for 10 Districts

Guwahati: Tragedy struck Assam as heavy rains, fueled by Cyclone Remal, claimed the lives of three individuals, including a school student, within the last 24 hours. With more downpours expected, officials have issued a red alert for 10 districts in the state.

The State Disaster Management Authority reported casualties in Morigaon, Kamrup (Metro), and Kamrup (Rural) districts. Among the victims was student Kaushik Amphi from Dhupguri, who tragically lost his life when a large tree fell on the autorickshaw he was travelling in on his way to school. Another incident involved a school bus in Dhekiajuli being hit by an uprooted tree, injuring several students.

The havoc caused by the heavy rains also led to power disruptions in various areas, with electric poles uprooted by strong winds. The Power Department has been working tirelessly to restore the supply. Moreover, road communications were severely impacted in the Barak Valley region and Dima Hasao district, while districts like Cachar and Karimganj faced flooding due to incessant rainfall.

Urban floods affected a total population of 21,714 in 11 wards of Silchar town in Cachar, prompting the Karimganj district administration to set up a relief camp in the Patharkandi area. Relief materials, including rice and pulses, were distributed to those affected by the floods.

As the Weather Department predicts further heavy rains, a red alert has been issued for Cachar, Karimganj, Hailakandi, Dima Hasao, West Karbi Anglong, Karbi Anglong, Nagaon, Hojai, and Golaghat districts. All educational institutes in these districts will remain closed to ensure the safety of students and staff.

The district administrations have been advised to regulate fishing activities, discourage agricultural work, evacuate vulnerable populations, ensure prompt payments of ex-gratia, and provide timely treatment to the injured. Additionally, efforts are underway to restore electricity and assess damages caused by the calamity.

With safety being a top priority, ferry services in several districts have been suspended to prevent any untoward incidents. Chief Secretary Ravi Kota chaired a high-level meeting in Guwahati to review the preparedness and response in the affected districts, instructing various government departments to devise action plans for the immediate restoration of infrastructure.
