A teacher at an Indianapolis elementary school is facing serious allegations after being accused of orchestrating and filming a fight between two 6-year-old boys inside a classroom. Julious Johnican, who worked at George Washington Carver Montessori IPS #87, is now facing a charge of neglect of a dependent, a level 6 felony, for failing to intervene in the altercation that took place in his classroom last year.
Marion County Prosecutor Ryan Mears expressed his concern over the incident, stating that schools should be safe spaces for children to learn and grow. He emphasized the importance of holding adults in positions of power accountable for ensuring the safety of students.
Video Evidence of the Incident
Court documents reveal that between September 20 and October 1, 2023, Johnican recorded a cellphone video of the fight between the two students. In the video, a man’s voice can be heard asking the boys if they were okay and if they were done fighting.
One of the children involved, identified as “O.D.,” was considered a victim of child neglect in the affidavit. His family has since filed a lawsuit against the school district. The other child, identified as “J.G.,” was seen striking O.D. in the chest, back, head, and face during the altercation.
Parental Response and School’s Actions
Upon discovering the video, O.D.’s parents were shocked and dismayed by the teacher’s lack of intervention. They immediately withdrew O.D. from the school and reported the incident to school officials. Johnican was subsequently placed on administrative leave and later chose to resign from his position.
Indianapolis Public Schools acknowledged that Johnican was hired as an emergency-permitted teacher during the pandemic and was not a fully certified educator. The school district reported the incident to the Department of Children Services, although initial response from DCS was delayed.
Legal Proceedings and Continued Investigation
As the case unfolds, O.D. has shared with DCS multiple instances of assault at the hands of other students, with allegations that the teacher allowed such behaviour to occur. Despite ongoing investigations, Johnican’s lawyer has not confirmed his participation in providing a recorded statement.
