Accident – Death – Obituary News :

A 30-year-old man from Fontana has been charged with murder following a fatal DUI crash in Newport Beach over the Memorial Day weekend. Joseph Alcazar, who had two previous DUI convictions, was arrested on May 25 for suspicion of homicide and cruelty to a child in connection with the tragic incident.

The crash, which occurred on the Balboa Peninsula, claimed the life of 14-year-old Rosenda Elizabeth Smiley from Rialto. She was crossing the street with two companions when the accident took place around 6:45 p.m. Investigators believe alcohol played a role in the collision.

According to the Orange County District Attorney’s Office, a driver had stopped to allow the group, including Smiley, to cross the street. However, Alcazar allegedly went around the stopped vehicle and struck Smiley, also injuring a 13-year-old girl. Despite stopping briefly after hitting Smiley, she was pronounced dead at the scene.

It was revealed that Alcazar had his 8-year-old daughter in the car at the time of the crash, along with another male passenger. In addition to the murder charge, Alcazar faces accusations of driving under the influence of alcohol causing injury, driving with a blood-alcohol content above the legal limit, and child abuse and endangerment.

Arraignment Scheduled for Wednesday Afternoon

Alcazar is expected to be arraigned on Wednesday afternoon to answer to the charges brought against him. The case has sparked outrage and calls for justice in the local community.

Julie Sharp, a digital producer at CBS Los Angeles, reported on the tragic incident. Sharp, who hails from the South Bay and studied print journalism at Cal State University Long Beach, provided detailed coverage of the case.
