SALISBURY — A man has been charged after officers discovered a makeshift weapon made from a toothbrush in his cell on Sunday.

Detention centre staff initiated an investigation on Sunday following reports of an inmate at the Rowan County Detention Centre possibly possessing a weapon. Captain Mark McDaniel, public information officer for the Rowan County Sheriff’s Office, stated that the inmate, identified as 34-year-old John Smith McCombs, was removed from his cell for a search.

During the search, staff found a toothbrush that had been modified into a makeshift weapon with a pointed end, as confirmed by McDaniel. The weapon was promptly confiscated.

McCombs had been incarcerated since his arrest on 24th August 2023, facing charges of felony drug offences and illegal possession of firearms, according to detention centre records. He was charged with an additional offence of possessing a weapon while in detention on Sunday.

Following a hearing before a magistrate, McCombs was denied bail under the Pretrial Integrity Act.
