Curtis Jefferson Jr. is in custody in connection with the fatal shooting of a driver, says Sumter Police.

SUMTER, S.C. (WOLO)– A 19-year-old suspect is currently in police custody, and a juvenile has been identified in relation to the tragic shooting incident that resulted in the death of a driver in Sumter.

According to authorities, the incident took place on Monday, May 27, when a driver was fatally shot at the intersection of Green Swamp Road and South Guignard Drive. The passenger in the vehicle sustained injuries and was transported to a local hospital for treatment.

The driver, identified as Tavares Keiwaun McFadden, succumbed to the gunshot wounds at the scene. The 28-year-old passenger, who also sustained gunshot wounds, was taken to the hospital for medical attention.

Police reports indicate that McFadden’s vehicle was stopped at a traffic signal on Green Swamp Road when a white sedan pulled up beside it and opened fire before fleeing the scene towards South Guignard Drive.

Curtis Jefferson Jr., a 19-year-old resident of Mayesville, was apprehended on Wednesday morning and is currently being held at the county detention center, as confirmed by Sumter Police. Jefferson Jr. has been formally charged with murder and attempted murder in connection with the fatal shooting.

Law enforcement officials have also identified a juvenile involved in the shooting and are actively working to locate and apprehend them, according to the Sumter Police Department.

The department is continuing its investigation to gather more information that could lead to the identification and arrest of other individuals and the vehicle linked to the shooting incident.
