Suspect in Pownal Murder Case Apprehended in South Carolina

The Vermont State Police have made a significant breakthrough in the investigation into the tragic murder of Casey Gras in Pownal. Elizah Coppedge, an 18-year-old from Chicopee, Massachusetts, has been arrested in South Carolina on a warrant for second-degree murder.

Coppedge is currently being held as a fugitive from justice at the Greenwood County Detention Center in Greenwood, South Carolina. His arrest comes after members of the Greenwood City Police Department apprehended him on May 19.

Casey Gras, a 36-year-old resident of Bennington, was fatally stabbed on February 6, 2024, in Pownal. The Vermont State Police have been diligently working on the case, and Coppedge’s arrest marks a significant development in the ongoing investigation.

Authorities have indicated that Coppedge will remain in custody in South Carolina until extradition proceedings are initiated to bring him back to Vermont to face the murder charge. The Vermont State Police will provide updates on Coppedge’s arraignment once a date has been scheduled.

An autopsy conducted on Casey Gras determined that the cause of death was multiple stab wounds to the abdomen and chest, confirming the incident as a homicide. The police investigation suggests that the murder was the result of a drug-related dispute.

Coppedge, described as a 6-foot-2-inch Black man weighing 200 pounds, was last seen in Pittsfield, Massachusetts, on the night of February 6. The Vermont State Police are urging anyone with information on his whereabouts to come forward and assist in the investigation.
