In a disturbing incident in Sankari, Salem, a 75-year-old man named S Mariappan was arrested under the Protection of Children from Sexual Offences (POCSO) Act for sexually harassing a 13-year-old girl near Edappadi on Sunday.
The incident occurred while the young girl was washing her clothes at a public tap. The accused, Mariappan, lured her to his house under the pretext of seeking her help and then proceeded to sexually harass her, according to Inspector Sumithra of the Sankari all-women police.
Following the arrest, Mariappan was sent to judicial custody and is currently lodged at the Salem central prison. The swift action by the authorities in apprehending the perpetrator is commendable and highlights the importance of stringent laws to protect minors from such heinous acts.
