In Assam, the aftermath of Cyclone Remal has brought devastation, with heavy rains and strong winds causing widespread destruction. Two individuals have tragically lost their lives, while 17 others have been injured in separate incidents.

Loss of Lives

Putul Gogoi, a worker at the under-construction NHPC’s Lower Subansiri Hydroelectric Power project in Lakhimpur district, was killed in a landslide triggered by the incessant rains. In another tragic incident, 17-year-old college student Kausik Bordoloi Amphi lost his life when a tree fell on the auto-rickshaw he was travelling in at Dighalbori in Morigaon district.

Injuries and Impact

The impact of the cyclone also resulted in injuries to several individuals. In Sonitpur district, 12 children were injured when a tree fell on their school bus. Additionally, one person sustained injuries in the Palashbari area as they tried to escape a falling tree.

Response and Precautions

Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma has urged citizens to exercise caution and avoid unnecessary travel. The inclement weather is expected to persist, and authorities are on high alert to respond to any emergencies promptly. The Assam State Disaster Management Authority has advised people to avoid vulnerable structures and stock up on essential items.

Infrastructure Damage

The impact of the cyclone has led to the disruption of road communication between Haflong and Cachar, with restrictions imposed on traffic. Trees have been uprooted, power supply has been disrupted, and water-logging has been reported in various towns across the state.

Weather Warning

The India Meteorological Department has issued warnings of extremely heavy rainfall across Assam as a result of the cyclone. Ferry services have been suspended in multiple districts to ensure the safety of the public.

Assistance and Monitoring

The National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) and State Disaster Response Force (SDRF) are on standby to assist in managing the situation. Efforts are underway to assess the extent of damage caused by the storm and rains.
