Accident – Death – Obituary News :

TUCSON, Ariz. (KVOA) – Mitchell Rutherford, a 35-year-old high school biology teacher at Sahuaro High School in Arizona, has decided to resign from his position after more than a decade of teaching. His reason for leaving? Frustrations with his students’ incessant phone use.

Rutherford expressed concerns about what he perceives as a growing problem of phone addiction among his students, leading him to struggle with his own mental health this year. He described the situation as students being unable to detach from their devices, likening the addiction to that of drugs.

Despite his efforts to address the issue through various methods, such as offering extra credit, discussing screen time, and implementing a “phone jail” basket, Rutherford found that the problem only worsened over time. He believes that the constant use of phones has caused students to disconnect from society and themselves.

Parents of students at Sahuaro High School have expressed understanding and support for Rutherford’s decision to leave his teaching position. Chuck Anderson, a parent, acknowledged the challenges Rutherford faced in trying to educate students who are constantly glued to their phones. Similarly, Bernadette Saucedo shared her own experience with her teenage sons’ phone usage, highlighting the pervasive nature of the issue.

Rutherford’s departure serves as a stark reminder of the impact of technology on education and mental well-being, prompting conversations about the need for boundaries and balance in the use of electronic devices in educational settings.
