Indianapolis police were involved in a shooting incident early on Tuesday, May 28, 2024. The incident took place at approximately 9:35 a.m. at an apartment complex in the 3800 block of Breen Drive, near East 38th Street and North Post Road. Fortunately, no officers were injured during the incident.
Background on 2024 Police-Involved Shootings in Indianapolis
This latest shooting marks the third such incident this month involving officers from the Indianapolis Metropolitan Police Department. The previous incidents occurred on May 2 and May 15.
On May 2, Indianapolis police responded to reports of an armed individual in the 3900 block of Broadway Street, near 38th Street and North College Avenue. During the altercation, the officers shot and killed 35-year-old Lemar Brandon Qualls, who was reported to have pointed a gun at both a civilian and the officers present at the scene.
On May 15, officers were called to a location near Eagle Creek where a person had been shot by their roommate. Upon arrival, the officers found a man with gunshot wounds to his abdomen, who was later taken to a hospital in stable condition. The suspect, identified as 26-year-old Kelvin Andrew Chandler, was located in the 6500 block of Apollo Way. An exchange of gunfire occurred between Chandler and an officer, resulting in Chandler’s apprehension.
These incidents add to the tally of police-involved shootings in 2024, which also includes the fatal shootings of Raphael Dekemper, Dominique Lamonte Durham Sr., and Luis Duran-Ruano earlier in the year.
Response and Investigation
Tuesday’s shooting comes in the wake of an announcement by Mayor Joe Hogsett and IMPD Chief Chris Bailey regarding a Department of Justice review of police shootings. This review was initiated following a significant increase in police-involved shootings in 2023, which resulted in 17 casualties. The timeline for the release of the review findings has not yet been established.
