POLK COUNTY (DrydenWire) – The Polk County Sheriff’s Office has identified the driver who tragically lost their life in a recent crash involving a passenger car and a semi-truck. The victim has been named as 34-year-old Alexis Steinberger from Clear Lake, Wisconsin.
The incident took place on Wednesday, May 22, 2024, at 4:55 PM, at the intersection of State Highway 63 and 60th Avenue, north of the Village of Clear Lake. According to reports, a passenger car carrying three occupants was traveling westbound on 60th Avenue when it failed to stop at a stop sign. The car then entered the path of a northbound semi-tanker truck on Highway 63, resulting in a devastating collision.
Alexis Steinberger, the driver of the passenger car, was airlifted from the scene but unfortunately succumbed to her injuries at the hospital. Another passenger was also flown from Amery Hospital and is currently in critical condition, while the third occupant of the car was transported to Amery Hospital and is in stable condition. Fortunately, the driver of the semi-truck sustained no serious injuries.
Emergency responders, including fire departments from Clear Lake and Clayton, successfully managed to contain the fuel leak from the overturned tanker. As a precaution, Highway 63 was closed overnight to facilitate the safe removal of the fuel and address a minor spill. The highway has since been reopened to traffic.
The Polk County Sheriff’s Office would like to express their gratitude to Clear Lake Fire, Clayton Fire, Clear Lake Ambulance, Northwestern Municipal EMS, Life Link Air Ambulance, Clear Lake Police, Amery Police, Wisconsin State Patrol, and the Polk County Highway Department for their prompt response and assistance at the crash scene.
At present, the investigation into the crash is ongoing and being conducted by the Polk County Sheriff’s Office in conjunction with the Wisconsin State Patrol.
