A Massachusetts man has been identified as the victim of a grizzly bear attack at Wyoming’s Grand Teton National Park. Shayne Patrick Burke, a 35-year-old resident of South Hadley, confirmed his identity while recovering from serious injuries sustained during the incident. The attack occurred on Sunday, May 19, when Teton Interagency Dispatch received a report of a bear attack in the area of Signal Mountain Summit Road.
Rescue and Recovery
Rescue crews quickly arrived at the scene and provided emergency medical care to Burke. Following the initial treatment, he was airlifted to an awaiting ambulance and transported to the hospital for further care. Thankfully, Grand Teton National Park officials have reported that Burke is in stable condition and is expected to make a full recovery.
Burke’s Account of the Incident
In a Facebook post shared with Western Mass News, Burke recounted the harrowing experience, stating that he believes the bear was a female protecting her cub. Despite the traumatic encounter, Burke expressed his love and respect for wildlife, attributing the attack to being in the wrong place at the wrong time.
Park Safety Measures
Following the incident, park officials are reminding visitors to exercise caution when exploring bear-inhabited areas. It is recommended to give bears plenty of space, carry bear spray as a precautionary measure, and refrain from leaving out food that may attract bears while hiking.
