Accident – Death – Obituary News : The brutal murder of a 27-year-old woman on the Pune campus of IT giant Infosys in 2017 sent shockwaves across the nation and raised serious concerns about the safety of women in workplaces. Rasila Raju O P, a systems engineer from Kozhikode, Kerala, was found dead in a conference room on the ninth floor of the Infosys premises in Hinjewadi on January 29, 2017. The initial examination revealed that she had been strangled to death, with visible injury marks on her face.
The police investigation led to the arrest of a 26-year-old security guard, Bhaben Bharali Saikia, who was captured on CCTV footage entering the office after Rasila on the day of the murder. He was apprehended in Mumbai on January 30 while attempting to flee to his hometown in Assam. Rasila’s colleague, Abhijit Kothari, filed a FIR with the Hinjewadi police station, now under the jurisdiction of the Pimpri-Chinchwad police commissionerate.
It was revealed that Rasila was working alone on the ninth floor that fateful Sunday when Saikia allegedly started staring at her. After a confrontation, Saikia hit her in the face, strangled her with a network cable, and took her access card. He later attempted to take his own life on the terrace but was stopped by another guard. Eventually, he confessed to his mother and was apprehended by the police in Mumbai.
Former Pune city police commissioner, Rashmi Shukla, raised questions about the security measures at the Infosys campus following the incident. She highlighted the lack of real-time monitoring of CCTV footage and the absence of emergency response protocols. Infosys released a statement expressing regret over the incident and pledged to enhance employee safety measures.
The tragic event prompted the Hinjewadi Industries Association to review security arrangements, and Infosys compensated Rasila’s family with Rs 1 crore. The prosecution filed a chargesheet in April 2017, and Saikia was charged with murder and destruction of evidence in March 2019. His lawyer, B A Aloor, claimed that there was no circumstantial evidence against his client and suggested that Rasila’s transfer issue may have played a role in her death.
Despite the ongoing trial, with 13 prosecution witnesses examined so far, police officials maintain that there is strong evidence against the accused. The case continues to unfold, with the quest for justice and accountability ongoing..
