Colombo: Sri Lankan security forces are investigating a 46-year-old man suspected of acting as a handler for four Sri Lankan nationals who were recently arrested at Ahmedabad airport in India for alleged links with the banned Islamic State (ISIS) outfit, according to a report on Monday.

Sri Lanka Police disclosed that the wanted suspect, known as Osmand Gerrard and residing in Dematagoda, frequently changes his appearance. Detectives suspect that he may be using various disguises to evade capture, as reported by the Newsfirst news portal.

Authorities in Sri Lanka have offered a cash reward of Rs. 2 million for any credible information leading to the whereabouts of the wanted suspect.

The Gujarat Anti-Terrorist Squad (ATS) arrested the four Sri Lankans with alleged ISIS connections at Sardar Vallabhai Patel airport in Ahmedabad on May 19. During the operation, the ATS also seized three pistols and cartridges at a location in Ahmedabad based on geo-coordinates, as well as a mobile phone from the suspects.

The arrested individuals, including Mohammed Nusrat, are under investigation. Nusrat, a businessman involved in importing telecommunication and electrical equipment from countries like Singapore, Malaysia, and Dubai, operated in Colombo where he sold these imported goods.

Another suspect, Mohammad Nafran, is the son of Niyas Naufer, also known as ‘Potta Naufer’, a notorious underworld criminal sentenced to death for the murder of High Court Judge Sarath Ambepitiya. The remaining two Sri Lankans, Mohammad Faris and Mohammad Rashdeen, have also been implicated in criminal activities.

Mohammad Faris, previously a cart puller in Pettah, was arrested by the Colombo Crimes Division on multiple occasions before his recent arrest in India. Mohammad Rashdeen, a three-wheeler driver, has been linked to the trafficking of crystal meth, or ICE.

Following the arrests in India, Sri Lankan authorities launched a thorough investigation into the activities and connections of the detained nationals to uncover any potential threats or networks associated with ISIS.
