LONDON — A prominent hitman affiliated with the Sinaloa drug cartel has been extradited from Mexico to the United States to face charges related to drug trafficking, illegal firearms possession, and witness intimidation, the Department of Justice confirmed over the weekend.

Néstor Isidro Pérez Salas, known by his alias “El Nini,” has been identified as a key figure in a group responsible for providing security to the sons of incarcerated drug kingpin Joaquín “El Chapo” Guzmán. This group, referred to as the “Chapitos,” has been implicated in the trafficking of fentanyl, a potent synthetic opioid responsible for tens of thousands of overdose deaths annually in the US.

No legal representation has been listed for Pérez Salas at this time.

Last year, the Justice Department unveiled a series of charges against cartel leaders, with the US Drug Enforcement Administration offering a $3 million reward for the capture of the 31-year-old Pérez Salas. He was apprehended in Culiacan, the capital of Sinaloa, in November.

In a statement, President Joe Biden expressed gratitude to Mexican President Andrés Manuel López Obrador for facilitating Pérez Salas’ extradition.

Biden pledged continued collaboration between the two countries in combating the fentanyl crisis that has claimed numerous lives globally and in bringing to justice individuals and groups involved in the production and distribution of these lethal substances.

The moniker “Nini” is believed to stem from Mexican slang denoting individuals who neither work nor study.

Former DEA official Mike Vigil described Pérez Salas as “a complete psychopath” at the time of his arrest.

Pérez Salas led a security detail known as the Ninis, a group with a reputation for extreme violence, particularly in their service to the Chapitos. The Ninis received extensive combat training, including urban warfare tactics and proficiency in marksmanship.

Authorities allege that Pérez Salas was involved in the brutal torture of a Mexican federal agent in 2017, during which he and his associates subjected the victim to horrific acts for an extended period.

According to court documents, the Ninis were responsible for carrying out gruesome acts of violence, including the execution of captured rivals at ranches owned by the Chapitos. Some victims were allegedly fed to tigers kept by the Chapitos as pets, either dead or alive.
