NEW YORK (WCBS, WLNY) — A shocking incident unfolded on Saturday afternoon in New York City when a man allegedly set a subway rider on fire at the Houston Street station. The NYPD has identified the suspect as 49-year-old Nile Taylor, who has been linked to a similar attack that occurred a few months prior.

Police responded to a call for an assault in progress on the 1 line platform and found 23-year-old Alijaj Petrit with severe burns after being targeted by Taylor with a flammable liquid. Taylor fled the scene but was apprehended near the Holland Tunnel shortly after.

Charges against Taylor include attempted assault, reckless endangerment, and arson. The victim is currently recovering at NewYork-Presbyterian Hospital and is expected to survive the ordeal.

Subway rider Chloe Leone described the incident as “horrifying,” reflecting the sentiments of many commuters who rely on the city’s transit system for daily travel.

Authorities revealed that Taylor was previously involved in a similar incident in February, where he threw a lit container of flammable liquid at a group of individuals at the West 28th Street station. Fortunately, no injuries were reported in that incident.

Security Measures in Response to Subway Attacks

While violent crimes in the subway system are relatively rare considering the high volume of daily passengers, recent incidents have prompted increased security measures. Governor Kathy Hochul announced the deployment of National Guard members to enhance security, along with an additional 800 police officers dedicated to subway patrols to combat fare evasion and ensure passenger safety.

In response to rising crime rates in the transit system, city officials have initiated the use of weapon-detection technology to bolster security measures. The goal is to address the 4% increase in subway-related crimes reported in 2024 compared to the previous year.

Amidst concerns over safety, commuters like Chloe Leone emphasize the importance of staying vigilant and being aware of their surroundings while traveling on the subway.

Leone stated, “Hopefully, people are traveling in pairs to enhance safety. My thoughts are with the victim of this tragic incident.”

Despite the risks associated with using public transportation in a bustling city like New York, commuters acknowledge the need to remain alert and cautious during their daily commutes.

“Incidents like these are a reminder of the unpredictable nature of city life. I try to stay vigilant while using the subway,” shared another commuter.
