Accident – Death – Obituary News :

A 70-year-old man from Homer, Alaska, lost his life in a tragic incident while trying to capture photos of two newborn moose calves. Dale Chorman was attacked and killed by the mother moose on Sunday, May 19, as confirmed by authorities. The female moose had recently given birth to the calves in Homer, leading to the fatal encounter.

According to Austin McDaniel, a spokesperson for the Alaska Department of Public Safety, the attack occurred while Chorman and another individual were searching for the moose in the brush. The cow moose unexpectedly charged at Chorman, resulting in fatal injuries. The second man managed to escape unharmed, although he did not witness the attack firsthand.

Medical personnel pronounced Chorman dead at the scene, while the cow moose retreated from the area. The incident has raised concerns about public safety and the behavior of wildlife in the region.

Alaska’s Moose Population and Behavior

The Alaska Department of Fish and Game typically receives reports of aggressive or unusual moose behavior in the state. Cyndi Wardlow, a regional supervisor in the Department of Wildlife Conservation, emphasized the importance of monitoring such incidents to ensure public safety.

As of 2015, Alaska was home to an estimated 200,000 moose, significantly more than the population in Washington. Moose encounters are relatively uncommon in Alaska, with fatal attacks being rare occurrences.

Understanding Moose Behavior in Washington

Unlike Alaska, the state of Washington is home to around 5,000 moose, primarily Shiras moose that are slightly smaller in size. Despite the smaller population, sightings of moose entering urban areas have increased in recent years, posing unique challenges for wildlife management.

The Washington Department of Fish and Wildlife (WDFW) advises caution when encountering moose in the wild, as these animals can exhibit aggressive behavior if provoked. While moose attacks on humans are considered rare, it is essential to maintain a safe distance and avoid approaching them.

Safety Precautions and Wildlife Conservation

Given the potential dangers posed by moose, both in Alaska and Washington, it is crucial for individuals to be cautious when encountering these animals. The WDFW recommends giving moose plenty of space, especially during mating season and when calves are present.

By understanding and respecting the natural behavior of moose, humans can coexist harmoniously with these majestic creatures. It is essential to follow guidelines for wildlife conservation and safety to prevent tragic incidents like the one that claimed Dale Chorman’s life in Alaska.
