Twelve individuals were left injured after a Qatar Airways flight bound for Dublin from Doha experienced severe turbulence on Sunday, aviation officials have confirmed.
Among the injured were six passengers and six crew members who suffered various injuries when the Boeing 787-9 Dreamliner encountered turbulence while flying over Turkey. Despite the unsettling incident, flight QR017 managed to land safely at Dublin Airport just before 1 p.m., with emergency services on standby. However, eight of those injured were subsequently transported to local hospitals for further treatment, as confirmed by Dublin Airport officials.
The exact nature and extent of the injuries sustained by the passengers and crew remain unclear, but witnesses on board described crew members with visible injuries, such as limping and wearing bandages. The turbulence reportedly struck during a routine food and drinks service on the flight.
One passenger, who captured a video of the incident, recounted, “The plane just seemed to go… stop—which it didn’t, but then dropped, quite a severe drop. Fortunately, the captain managed to regain control quickly, but there were a couple of passengers in front of us who didn’t have their seatbelts fastened and were thrown out of their seats, hitting their heads.”
Another passenger, identified as Conor, shared his experience with Irish broadcaster RTÉ, stating, “We saw the flight attendant being lifted into the air and coming straight back down.” His fellow traveler, Emma, added that she was half-asleep when the sudden drop occurred, recalling the panic-stricken expressions on the faces of other passengers.
Another passenger named Cathal, who was returning home to Ireland from Doha, mentioned that he was having dinner when the turbulence hit and the seatbelt signs were switched off. “There was food scattered all over the plane, on the ceiling, everywhere,” he remarked about the aftermath of the incident.
In response to the incident, Qatar Airways released a statement on X, confirming that the flight had landed safely and that a small number of passengers and crew had sustained minor injuries, receiving medical attention. The airline assured the public that an internal investigation was underway, emphasizing the safety and security of their passengers and crew as their top priority.
Despite the turbulence incident, flight operations at Dublin Airport remained unaffected, and the return flight to Doha was still scheduled to depart, albeit with a delay.
This occurrence comes less than a week after a tragic incident on a Singapore Airlines flight, where a 73-year-old man lost his life due to extreme turbulence. The incident left 22 passengers with spine and spinal cord injuries, six with skull and brain injuries, and an additional 13 with bone, muscle, or other injuries.
