The Chatham County Sheriff’s Office has confirmed the tragic drowning of 16-year-old Bryan Guzman at Jordan Lake on Sunday afternoon. Guzman, a visitor from Winston-Salem, was at the lake with his brother and a friend when the incident occurred.

According to reports, the drowning took place around 3:30 p.m. near Ebenezer Picnic Area A, situated at 452 Ebenezer Road in New Hill. Guzman’s brother made a distress call to 911 upon witnessing his brother struggling while swimming in a cove that was not designated for swimming activities.

Chatham County Sheriff Mike Roberson expressed his condolences to the Guzman family during this difficult time, stating, “Our hearts go out to them as they mourn the loss of their son and brother.”

Emphasizing the importance of water safety, the sheriff’s office issued a reminder for all Jordan Lake visitors to adhere to safety guidelines, especially during holiday weekends. Recommendations include wearing a life jacket, staying within designated swimming areas, closely supervising children, and being mindful of water conditions.

The sheriff’s office has assured continued patrols at Jordan Lake throughout the remainder of the Memorial Day holiday to ensure the safety of all visitors.
