The Pune Police have made a significant development in the case involving the alleged manipulation of the blood sample of a teenager accused of causing a fatal accident in the Kalyani Nagar area of Pune city. A third individual, identified as Atul Ghatkamble, an employee of Sassoon Hospital, has been arrested in connection with the case.
Prior to this arrest, Dr Ajay Tawade, head of the forensic lab, and Dr Hari Harnor of Pune’s Sassoon General Hospital were taken into custody for their alleged involvement in switching the blood sample of the accused with another individual’s sample.
Police Investigation
According to Pune Police Commissioner Amitesh Kumar, the manipulation of the blood samples was orchestrated by a doctor from Sassoon General Hospital at the behest of the juvenile’s father, who offered inducements for the switch. The altered report from the hospital indicated no presence of alcohol in the teenager’s blood.
Further investigations led to the arrest of Dr Ajay Taware and Dr Shrihari Halnor, who were implicated in the replacement of the blood samples. As a precautionary measure, an additional sample of the juvenile was taken for DNA sampling, which confirmed discrepancies between the original report and the one from another hospital.
CCTV footage from Sassoon Hospital has been recovered as part of the ongoing probe to determine whose blood samples were used to replace those of the juvenile.
Kidnapping Case
In a related development, the Pune court has granted permission for the police to take custody of the teenager’s father, Vishal Agarwal, who is currently incarcerated in Yerwada Central Jail. Agarwal is facing charges in a separate case of kidnapping and wrongful confinement involving his driver.
The police had sought a production warrant for Agarwal in connection with the kidnapping case, where he is also accused alongside the managers and owners of two pubs under the Juvenile Justice Act.
The fatal incident that sparked these investigations occurred when two IT professionals lost their lives after their motorcycle was struck by a speeding Porsche allegedly driven by the minor in the early hours of May 19 in Kalyani Nagar.
