Police in Pune have uncovered a disturbing development in the case of a fatal crash involving a juvenile driver. Authorities revealed on Monday that the blood samples of the juvenile driver were tampered with, leading to a false report that showed no traces of alcohol.
Pune Police Commissioner Amitesh Kumar disclosed, “On 19th May, at around 11 am, the blood sample that was collected at Sassoon Hospital was disposed of in a dustbin, and another individual’s blood sample was substituted and sent to the forensic lab. CMO Srihari Halnor orchestrated this switch at the direction of Sassoon’s HOD Forensic Medicine Department, Ajay Tawre.”
The juvenile’s father reportedly contacted Dr Taware to orchestrate the replacement of the blood samples, according to Commissioner Kumar.
An investigation is now underway to determine whose blood samples were collected and substituted with those of the juvenile driver. This revelation has led to the arrest of two doctors from Sassoon General Hospital for alleged manipulation of blood samples and destruction of evidence in the case.
The individuals arrested include the head of the hospital’s forensic department. The police have identified the arrested individuals as Dr Ajay Taware and Shrihari Harnor. The crime branch is currently handling the investigation.
The incident in question involved a car accident where a 17-year-old boy allegedly driving a Porsche collided with a motorcycle, resulting in the deaths of two IT professionals. Police claim that the teenager was under the influence of alcohol at the time of the crash.
Initially, the teenager was granted bail by the Juvenile Justice Board, which also mandated him to write an essay on road accidents. However, following public outcry over the lenient treatment and a review application by the police, he was remanded to an observation home until June 5.
In connection with the accident, the police have also arrested the teenager’s father, a realtor, and his grandfather. The investigation into the tampering of blood samples adds a new layer of complexity to this tragic case.
