ANDOVER, MASS. (WHDH) – A devastating wrong-way crash on I-93 in Methuen resulted in the loss of two lives in the early hours of Monday morning, according to a statement released by state police.
The fatal collision occurred around 2:10 a.m. on the southbound side of I-93, leaving a trail of destruction in its wake.
Initial findings from the ongoing investigation revealed that a Toyota RAV4 was travelling in the incorrect direction, heading north in the southbound lanes, before colliding head-on with a Toyota Camry. The impact of the collision caused the Camry to then collide with a third vehicle, compounding the severity of the incident.
Tragically, the driver of the Camry, a 21-year-old resident of Quincy, was pronounced deceased at the scene. Similarly, the driver of the RAV4, a 53-year-old resident of Quincy, succumbed to their injuries after being transported to a local hospital.
In response to the crash, all three lanes of I-93 were closed for approximately three hours to facilitate the investigation and clear the wreckage, causing disruptions to early morning commuters.
As of 3 p.m. on Monday, the investigation into the circumstances surrounding the crash was ongoing, with authorities working diligently to piece together the events leading up to the tragic collision.
