A 65-year-old woman has been taken into custody and charged with murder and arson in connection to the tragic death of a 70-year-old man in Brooklyn. The incident occurred at 371 Monroe Street within the 79th Precinct.
Details of the Incident
On Friday night, emergency services responded to a call reporting smoke coming from an apartment at around 11:15 PM. Firefighters swiftly arrived at the scene and managed to extinguish the fire. However, upon further inspection, they discovered the lifeless body of Vetus Roberts in the bedroom of the apartment.
Arrest and Charges
The following day, Jennifer Rochard, who also resided at the same address, was arrested at approximately 8:40 PM. She has been charged with second-degree murder and second-degree arson in connection to the incident. Rochard was taken to NYC Health and Hospitals/Woodhull for treatment of smoke inhalation and is currently in stable condition.
Investigation Ongoing
The cause of Vetus Roberts’ death is still pending determination by the Office of the Chief Medical Examiner. The Fire Marshal has concluded that the fire was deliberately set.
