Toto Wolff mulls over Mercedes succession plan

Mercedes team boss Toto Wolff has revealed that he and the team have not yet identified a successor for his role when he decides to step back. Wolff, who has been at the helm of Mercedes’ F1 squad for the past decade, is considering a succession plan as he looks towards reducing his involvement in the team.

Succession planning for Mercedes F1 team

Turning 52 this year, Wolff has hinted at the possibility of taking a step back from his frontline leadership role within the team. While a potential successor, Jerome d’Ambrosio, was previously considered for the position, his departure earlier this year has left Mercedes and Wolff back at square one.

Speaking about the succession plan, Wolff mentioned, “I have had it in the past where suddenly you have that moment where you think there is somebody that could do this better. That day will come but, jointly [with INEOS and Daimler, Mercedes co-owners], we have not identified who the next person will be.”

Despite the recent challenges faced by the team, Wolff expressed his continued passion for the role, stating, “I still love it. Maybe one day I wake up and I don’t love it. There might be a stone falling on my head and I am not the team principal anymore. But this is the destiny I am choosing with my co-shareholders.”

Having recently signed a new three-year contract with Mercedes, Wolff emphasized his commitment to the team and his self-evaluation process to ensure he is the right person for the role. He stated, “I have always been very self-critical and introspective. Is this what I am good at? Am I working in something that I understand and I feel I can contribute?”

Wolff added, “I have signed a new three-year contract and I am going to be the most permanent unless I die, but maybe in various roles in the top management.”
