Tragedy struck in York as a fatal accident claimed the lives of three individuals and left three others injured on Friday night.
The incident occurred at the intersection of Highways 81 and 34 around 8:30 p.m. when an SUV failed to yield and pulled out in front of a semitruck, according to the York County Sheriff’s Office.
The victims in the SUV, identified as 62-year-old Randall Wheeler, 69-year-old Janniee Wheeler, both from York, and 70-year-old Rita Beins from Lincoln, were pronounced dead at the scene.
Emergency services rushed a fourth occupant of the SUV and two individuals from the semi to the hospital with non-life-threatening injuries.
The junction of Highways 81 and 34 was closed off for several hours to facilitate the investigation but has since reopened to traffic.
Authorities are continuing their inquiries into the circumstances surrounding the crash to determine the cause.
