A devastating fire in Buyende has resulted in the tragic loss of a businessman, his wife, and two grandchildren. The victims have been identified as Patrick Ssendi, 67, Jesca Mukyala, 64, Peter Senguko, 3, and one-year-old Shalom Namu, according to the authorities.
The heartbreaking incident took place at Kiga landing site, Buyanja ‘A’ village, Buyanja sub-county in Buyende district. Preliminary investigations indicate that the fire broke out on May 23, 2024, around 7:30 pm. The blaze started when a customer, known only as William, visited Ssendi’s home to purchase fuel for a boat engine.
Tragically, during the transaction, some fuel accidentally spilled near a doorway where a charcoal stove was in use. Despite Mukyala’s efforts to move the stove away, the fuel ignited, leading to a rapid spread of the fire that engulfed the home. The blaze claimed the lives of four family members and left their property in ruins.
Three individuals managed to escape the inferno with injuries. Damalie Nantongo, 20, granddaughter Bridget Namyalo, 9, and another individual identified as William, 17, were able to flee the burning house.
Following the tragic incident, a team of detectives from Buyende Central Police Station visited the scene to conduct a thorough investigation. The bodies of the deceased have been examined and released for burial, as further inquiries are ongoing.
Michael Kasadha, the regional spokesperson for Busoga North, emphasized the importance of adhering to legal and safe fuel storage practices to prevent similar tragedies in the future.
