WASHINGTON — Mexican authorities have extradited a key assassin for the notorious Sinaloa drug cartel to the United States to stand trial on charges related to drug trafficking, gun crimes, and witness intimidation, the Justice Department announced on Saturday.

Néstor Isidro Pérez Salas, also known as “El Nini,” is believed to be a high-ranking member of a group responsible for providing security to the sons of the imprisoned drug kingpin Joaquín “El Chapo” Guzmán. Additionally, Pérez Salas is accused of aiding the sons in their drug trafficking operations, particularly in the distribution of fentanyl, a potent synthetic opioid responsible for tens of thousands of overdose deaths annually in the U.S.

According to federal investigators, Pérez Salas played a key role in the Sinaloa Cartel’s criminal activities, including orchestrating murders, torture, and kidnappings of rivals and witnesses who posed a threat to the cartel’s operations.

U.S. Attorney General Merrick Garland stated, “We allege El Nini was one of the Sinaloa Cartel’s lead sicarios, or assassins, and was responsible for the murder, torture, and kidnapping of rivals and witnesses who threatened the cartel’s criminal drug trafficking enterprise.”

President Joe Biden expressed gratitude to Mexican President Andrés Manuel López Obrador for facilitating Pérez Salas’s extradition, emphasising the importance of international cooperation in combating the fentanyl epidemic and dismantling criminal organisations involved in drug trafficking.

At the time of his arrest, former DEA official Mike Vigil described Pérez Salas as “a complete psychopath” due to his violent and ruthless nature. The assassin commanded a security team known as the Ninis, which received extensive military-style training in various combat techniques.

Pérez Salas and his associates are accused of carrying out heinous acts of violence, including the torture of a Mexican federal agent in 2017. The indictment against him alleges that the Ninis would take captured rivals to properties owned by the Chapitos, where some victims were reportedly fed to tigers owned by the cartel leaders.

The extradition of Pérez Salas marks a significant milestone in the ongoing efforts to dismantle the operations of the Sinaloa Cartel and hold its members accountable for their crimes.
