A 29-year-old man from Hyderabad was apprehended for allegedly trying to open the door of a Hyderabad-bound IndiGo flight while it was mid-air, just before the aircraft was preparing to land. The incident occurred on May 21 but was only brought to light on Friday.
According to police reports, the passenger, a resident of Chandragirinagar in Gajularamaram, Hyderabad, had reportedly consumed ‘bhang’ before boarding the flight from Indore.
Shortly after the IndiGo flight departed, the man started exhibiting unusual and “weird” behavior, as per media accounts. The flight crew decided to move him to a different seat, but he insisted on sitting next to his two companions with whom he had traveled to Ujjain in Madhya Pradesh.
As the plane was about to touch down, the passenger attempted to open the aircraft’s door. Both the airline staff and fellow passengers intervened to prevent him from doing so, the police disclosed.
Upon landing at the Rajiv Gandhi International Airport in Hyderabad, the airline staff filed a complaint against the passenger, leading to his arrest.
However, the 29-year-old was later released on bail after medical reports suggesting that he was suffering from “health issues” were presented to the authorities.
Similar Incident on IndiGo Flight Earlier This Month
In a related occurrence earlier this month, a 22-year-old man from West Bengal was booked by Bengaluru’s Kempegowda International Airport (KIA) police for trying to open the emergency exit door of an IndiGo flight while it was taxiing on the runway. The incident reportedly took place on the Kolkata-Bengaluru route.
The accused, identified as Koushik Karan, was charged under section 336 of the Indian Penal Code, which pertains to endangering the lives or safety of others.
During the investigation, the individual claimed that it was his first time flying and he was unaware of the regulations.
