Accident – Death – Obituary News :

On the solemn occasion of the 45th anniversary of the tragic crash of American Airlines Flight 191, families, first responders, and others connected to the devastating event gathered in Des Plaines to honour the memories of the 273 lives lost.

Among those in attendance were siblings Kim Jockl, Melody Smith, and Jim Borchers, who lost their parents, Corrinne and Bill Borchers, in the crash. The Borchers were en route to Hawaii when the tragedy occurred.

The memorial event, held at Lake Park in Des Plaines, was a poignant reminder of the impact of the deadliest non-terrorist aviation disaster in American history. The ceremony included a moment of silence lasting 31 seconds, symbolising the duration of the ill-fated flight, followed by the reading of the names of the passengers, flight crew, and two ground victims.

One of the attendees, William Meskan, a retired Red Cross member who responded to the scene of the crash, described the event as “the worst of my life.” Meskan and his wife were part of the efforts to identify the victims swiftly to provide closure to their families.

Daniel McGinley, who attended the ceremony in memory of his cousin Eileen Plesa, shared his heartfelt sentiments, remembering his cousin as a “beautiful, talented young lady.” As Plesa’s name was read during the memorial, McGinley offered a heartfelt tribute, saying, “God bless you, Eileen.”

The event concluded with a prayer and blessing by the Rev. Michael Zaniolo, who sprinkled earth from the crash site over the memorial wall. Reflecting on the tragedy, Jockl expressed hope that the souls of those aboard Flight 191 have found peace in their final destination.

The poignant gathering also featured a musical tribute with a guitar-accompanied vocalist singing “Somewhere Over the Rainbow,” providing a touching conclusion to the commemorative ceremony.

As families laid flowers at the memorial wall and individuals made rubbings of their loved ones’ names, the community came together to honour the memory of the lives lost in the tragic crash.
