Accident – Death – Obituary News :

As a combat veteran, I often find myself in a slightly awkward position when someone wishes me a “Happy Memorial Day.” While I appreciate the sentiment, it is important to remember the somber nature of this day. Memorial Day is a time to honour and remember the brave soldiers, sailors, airmen, and Marines who have made the ultimate sacrifice while serving their country.

Remembering the Sacrifice

One of the best ways to truly understand the sacrifice made by these individuals is to take the time to reflect on their lives. Instead of simply enjoying a day off or engaging in festive activities, consider setting aside some time to visit the Wall of Faces. This online memorial features photos and tributes to those who lost their lives during the Vietnam War.

Take a moment to choose a significant date in your own life, such as your birthday or anniversary, and look at the individuals who perished on that day during the war. Explore their stories, read the messages from loved ones, and contemplate the years of life they missed out on.

You may find yourself drawn to spend more than just a brief moment on this site. The stories of these fallen soldiers are powerful reminders of the true cost of war.

One Soldier’s Story

Let me share with you the story of Garney Burleson, a young farm boy from North Carolina who gave his life in service of his country. Garney was a member of the elite aero-rifle platoon of B Troop, 1/9 Cavalry, part of the renowned 1st Cavalry Division, known as the “Bravo Blues.”

Tragically, Garney was killed in action on January 28, 1971, at the tender age of 20. He lies buried in a small church cemetery in North Carolina, with no immediate family left to remember him.

Despite his short time in Vietnam, Garney displayed remarkable courage under fire. In one harrowing incident, he narrowly escaped a bullet that struck his rifle, displaying remarkable calm and resilience in the face of danger.

On Memorial Day 2018, Garney’s former platoon leader made a pilgrimage to his gravesite, only to find it neglected and devoid of any commemoration. Moved by this oversight, he took it upon himself to honour Garney’s memory by placing a small American flag and flowers on his grave.

Honouring the Fallen

As we observe Memorial Day, let us take a moment to remember Garney Burleson and all the other brave men and women who have given their lives in service of our nation. Their sacrifice should never be forgotten, and it is our duty to honour their memory.
